PALACE & COURTYARD

OF THE LIONS

This was the focal point of the sultan's private dwellings, within which there were areas set aside for the women of the house.

GATES, WALLS TOWERS AND RAMPARTS OF THE ALHAMBRA

Of the thirty or more towers which originally fortified the ramparts surrounding the Alhambra twenty-two still exist., each with its own name usually based on mundane usage.

THE BATH HOUSES

The bath-house of the Comares Palace had a very specific function directly related to politics and diplomacy.  It was a comfortable place to conduct the friendly management of official business.

PARTAL AREA

The open portico of the Tower of the Ladies overlooking a small esplanade containing a pool is called a partal in Arabic and today includes the whole area beside the Palace of the Lions.

GENERALIFE

PALACE & GARDENS

This is the only one remaining of the many granges that once existed. The Generalife was a retreat where the Granadan monarchs could relax, away from the daily toil and bustle of the court.

THE ALCAZABA (OLD CITADEL)

The Alcazaba, unjustly forgotten by all those who after the Christian conquest wrote in dazzling terms about the Nasrid palaces, is the solitary forbear of an entire palatine city: Madinat-al-Hamra

THE MEXUAR PALACE

This is the area of the palace complex that has undergone most transformation since its earliest days. Changes were made by the Christian governors to adapt it to new roles and functions.

THE COMARES PALACE

This complex including the Hall of the Ambassadors, or Throne Room, forms the most important nucleus of the Alhambra. Its balanced proportions lend the courtyard a feeling of serene majesty.

FOUNTAIN & PALACE

 OF CHARLES V

If any one monument can be so controversial and misunderstood and yet so often referred to as outstanding it is the Palace of Charles V.
